100 Days Smarter

We celebrated the 100th Day of school, completed activities throughout the day, and had lots of fun!  Here are some pics.

Here they are at 100!!  They look pretty good.  They still have all their teeth and hair.

Students also made a snack with 100 treats and they wrote what they would buy if they had $100.

100th Day of School

We celebrated the 100th day of school a little over a week ago.  First graders rotated to each first grade classroom where they completed activities.  We searched our room in the morning for 100 Smarties since we were 100 days smarter.  Some included making a cupcake with 100 sprinkles, 100 Day Hats, Fruit Loop necklaces, and portraits.  I was so busy I only took one picture of them all lined up at the door.

As I walked in, in the morning I quickly realized one of my balloons was flying free!  You can see the small, black dot.  We had a blast and had fun celebrating.

Students rotated to each first grade classroom.  They decorated a cupcake with 100 sprinkles, worked on 100 piece puzzles, made hats, sunglasses, and a portrait of what they'd look like when they're 100!

100 Years Young

We celebrated the 100th day of school on Tuesday.  Students rotated to each first grade classroom to complete activities.

Every year I use the app Oldster.  I take their pictures and they get to see what they'll look like at 100!  Yes, this app scares me a bit because I'm PRAYING I don't look like that at 100 but the kids were cracking up once they saw their pictures.

So I used Oldster this morning to show the kids just what it could do. YIKES, I should've rethought that.

I think this app has changed A LOT in a year...either that or I'm not aging as well as I did last year when using this.

Today students had to decide what they would do if they had $100.  I also found this great site that lets you add faces to money.  The link is here... Festisite Money. 

This saves me SO much time. I used to go to the Dollar Store and buy the play money.  I'd cut out the pictures, glue them on, and laminate.

I told the kids that I was going to make ALL of their dreams come true today and they'd each get a $100!  When I handed these out they weren't sure what to make of them at first because they did look real. Then one by one they began to realize their pictures were on the money.

During their lunch time I hid 100 Smarties around the room.  Before we began math I had them go on a hunt looking for pairs of Smarties. I had papers on the floor counting by tens.  They found almost all of them.  Two are hiding some where in the room still!!

I hope they ALL had a great day today!

99th Day of School...Almost the 100th

So even though it's only the 99th day of school today we had our celebration, or should we say pre celebration!

Today would've been our 100th day if we hadn't had a snow day and since the first grade team had already planned our day we continued on with our schedule.

The kids rotated to each classroom to complete activities.  Ms. Fogarty had the students exercising, Miss O had 100 piece puzzles, Mrs. Anderson had stamping activities, Mrs. Berube had the kids string Fruit Loops, and I had students create portraits of what they'd look like at 100.

Of course I ALWAYS forget how much this activity entails.  With only 30 minutes, it's just NEVER enough time.  We worked right up until the last minute and their portraits were adorable.

The LONGEST Blog Post and a Giddy Teacher

So I'm quite giddy tonight.  I came home to find out my husband had bought me a NEW Mac Pro.  My school laptop had to be sent away to be fixed and lets just say I've been quite cranky lately because I haven't been able to create!!

I think he wants me to get back to work!!

We've also been learning about Matter.  Our focus has been solids and liquids.  The kids sorted different types of beans and even built towers with everyday materials.

We've completed  some winter writing.  We wrote what we'd do if we were stuck in a snowglobe and students wrote steps on "How to Build a Snowman."  I used Ivory Flakes and the kids helped me measure the ingredients so they could create their own snowmen.

I consider myself to be quite crafty...but not in the sewing department.  I was looking for a way to cover my windows and here's what I came up with.  My grandmother gave me a quick lesson (which was quite comical) on how to do a straight stitch.  I used tension roads and have a ribbon attached to the larger window fabric so I can roll it up.  I think they came out cute and I LOVE the fabric!

We also celebrated the 100th day of school!!  Wow, the excitement over the number 100.  The kids went to each first grade class and completed activities.  They exercised, stamped, made Cheerio necklaces, put together 100 piece puzzles, and made their portraits of what they'd look like at 100.

The kids completed Eskimo Math.  They predicted, tallied, and recorded how many bites it would take to eat a Klondike.  YUM!!  Students also had to describe what it looked like and how it tasted.  Let's just say, they ENJOYED this activity.

And last but not least...I introduced Brown Bag Book Club last week.  This is when kids get together with a buddy and share a GREAT book they've read during the week.  They fill out a quick worksheet, share their books, and eat a snack provided by me (that's why they have the brown bag).

Have you ever used Oldster?  This is one of the funniest apps on the IPad that I've seen.  Here I am at 100.  I'm still lookin' pretty good, right?  I'm sure that's all natural hair color and not from a bottle.  Of course I took pictures of the kids too...not just of me!

I have SOO much to share but I still don't have my laptop back.  I know when I do get it back, I'll have the longest post ever.

I'm beginning to fall into the state of being of feeling really relaxed and not consumed with work but I have a list of things brewing up that I want to get done.

100 Days Smarter

So on Sunday I found myself with the nasty flu bug!  Lets just say I spent a lot of time hugging my toilet (graphic, I know) and cloroxing at the same time.  Oh, I rarely get sick so I wasn't at all impressed.  The assistant principal has even begun calling me Ralphie.  Great!

Aren't all teachers Super Heros?  Well,  I thought so and I believed I could make it to school on Monday.  I mean, 100's Day on Monday and Valentine's Day on Tuesday.  I couldn't miss those!

Plus making sub plans takes too much time...it's easier to just be there.  Also, our team planned activities to rotate through and I had taken my art activity home to prep for Monday.  I knew no matter what I had to drive to school in the morning to drop things off and seeing my commute is almost 30 minutes I thought I should just stay.

I got to school on Monday completely on FIRE!  Literally on FIRE!!  Not the type of fire where you're multi-tasking, every thing's in fast motion, and organized for the day.  It was the type of fire where you're actually taking off your sweater (I live in Maine) to try to cool down.  That's when I knew I wouldn't make it.  I guess every Super Hero has his/her day.

I never call in so I guess it's sometimes okay to just let go.  I knew I'd have a great sub and the kiddos were in good hands.  Plus everyone seemed to be telling me to go home.  I'm thinking they REALLY cared or I looked REALLY bad and they didn't want to catch it.  I got to enjoy part of the morning with the other first graders and then went home to SLEEP!!

I feel much better today and was able to enjoy Valentine's Day.  If only my voice would come back.  I've had laryngitis for about a week.  Ugh, not complaints though.  The kiddos have been so good.

The kids went on a Smarties Hunt.  I hid them around the room.  Apparently I miscounted because they could only find 90.  I'll blame it on the illness!!

Who wouldn't want a picture on themselves on a $100 bill?  I've done this every year and the kids get a kick out of it.  We have a color printer so when I laminated them they turned green.  Yikes!!  They look a bit like Lady Liberty.  They had to write what they would do with $100.
